Llegó Marzo, llegó el verano.
El domingo 1 de Marzo, me tomé mi primer Frapuccino de la temporada (no lo hacía desde Agosto de 2012) y con él di por inaugurada la temporada estival en Madrid. Aquel día, esos 23 grados que marcaba el termómetro me recordaron que la época de los inviernos infinitos, días lluviosos, y atardeceres anticipados, formaba parte de un oscuro pasado.  Esos 23 grados sabían a gloria, y para mí significaban motivo suficiente para llegar a casa, esconder el abrigo de invierno donde jamás pudiera encontrarlo y desempolvar la ropa de primavera/verano (¡Ja! ¿Verano? ¿Eso qué es?) 

Para quien aún no lo sepa, viví en Inglaterra durante tres "veranos" y dos inviernos. Y quién haya visitado/vivido en la isla, sabe muy bien que allí no existe tal estación del año: por mucho que mis compañeros ingleses se empeñen en negarlo, 23 grados al sol y 19 a la sombra. ¡NO ES VERANO! Al final, uno acaba por echar mucho de menos esa sensación de "me estoy muriendo de calor, literal" que tanto nos (os) gusta a los españoles.

Además de mi Frapuccino, hay otra señal de que el tiempo está cambiando, de que se acerca la época de vacaciones y de que a todos la sangre nos altera: a partir de marzo, Madrid se viste, más si cabe aún, de gala para dar la bienvenida a los miles de turistas que empiezan a invadir Sol, Callao, Preciados, El museo del Prado, las terrazas, las discotecas, Fuencarral, Ulanka, entre otros.

Todo hay que decirlo, aunque en invierno el turismo en Madrid brilla por su ausencia, es llegar el buen tiempo, sacar terrazas, tintos, tapas y escuchar más inglés, alemán, francés, etc, por las calles, que el tan característico "ej que" madrileño. Me siento casi como en casa.

Las datos nos avalan
Según nuestro Ministro de Interior, cada vez son más las personas que eligen a la Península Ibérica como destino de vacaciones. En Madrid, se nota. Los datos publicados este año por  la Organización Mundial del Turismo apuntan a España como uno de los países que más turistas internacionales recibe, y dentro del país, la capital, Madrid, es la ciudad donde más se ha incrementado el número de visitantes.

Desde luego, algo más que el buen tiempo, las tapas, la feria de San Isidro, la Joy y Kapital, debe tener esta ciudad, que resulta tan atractivo a quien nos visita. En muchos casos, a Madrid le basta de hecho con ser la capital, para alzarse con el mérito de destino interesante.

Statistics says so
According to our Minister of Interior, more and more people choose the Iberian Peninsula as a holiday destination. It quite stands out in Madrid. Data released this year by the World Tourism Organization point to Spain as one of the countries that receives most international tourism, and within the country, the capital, Madrid, is the city where the number of visitors has increased mostly.

There must be more reasons than just good weather, tapas, the fair of San Isidro, the Joy and Kapital, which make Madrid  so attractive to our visitors. In many cases, indeed Madrid is enough to be the capital, to claim the merit of an interesting destination.

La gran pregunta, ¿Por qué Madrid?

Primera vez en Madrid. Acababan de llegar.

"La gente es agradable y el ambiente es más relajado que en Barcelona. El tiempo es mucho mejor que en Alemania. Nos quedamos una semana, y hemos visitado ya el Palacio Real...y nos hemos ido de compras. Vinimos a Madrid ¡porque es la capital! En Barcelona parece que hay mas turistas, es verdad, pero por esa misma razón nos parece más estresante.  

¡Madrid nos encanta! Las tapas y toda su gastronomía, ¡volveríamos sin duda!"

 "We've been here for a day and will stay for a week. People are very friendly and more relaxed than in Barcelona. The weather is also much better here than in Germany. We've already visited the Royal Palace and went shopping (laughs) We decided to come to Madrid because is the capital! Barcelona seems to have more tourists, true, but that's what makes it more stressful. We do really like Madrid, specially its food. So tasty! We'll definitely come back one day."

Primera vez en Madrid. 

Hija: "Es más pequeña de lo que pensé, en comparación con París, claro. Casi todos los monumentos están muy cerca entre sí, así que podemos visitar uno y otro caminando. ¡Hay muchos! Hemos visitado ya el Palacio Real, porque nos estamos quedando cerca, y también el Museo del Prado, ¡ah! También El Corte Inglés (risas). Aún tenemos una semana por delante para descubrir Madrid, aunque queremos ir a Toledo también. La gente de aquí es más abierta, más amable y amigable que los parisinos, sin duda. La forma en la que se visten aquí también es muy distinta a París."

First time in Madrid.

"It's smaller than I thought, in comparison with Paris, of course. There are a lot of monuments and museums to visit and they are quite close to each other so we can actually go by foot. We have visited the Royal Palace because we're staying nearby, have also been to Museo del Prado and El Corte Inglés. We're staying for a week and would love to visit Toledo as well.

Spanish people are super kind, welcoming, and warmer than Parisians, no doubt. I think, Madrilians are more open-minded, also the clothing style, the way they dressed is very different here. We choose Madrid because is the capital, and will definitely come back!"

Primera vez en Madrid.

"Mi familia es de Bolivia, y vive aquí en Madrid, así que he venido a visitarlos. El tiempo es perfecto ahora mismo, en comparación con Arizona. He visitado Plaza Mayor y el Valle de los Caídos, puede que visite Valencia y Barcelona.  Los madrileños son muy sociales aunque no hablan muy bien inglés (risas) además yo hablo un poco de español, así que me las arreglo para entendernos."

First time in Madrid

"My family is from Bolivia and they moved to Madrid, that's why I'm here. The weather is beautiful, is so much better compare to the States, because it's very hot right now in Arizona. I've been to Plaza Mayor and to the Fallen Valley. I'm going tomorrow to Valencia and might also go to Barcelona. Madrilians are very nice, they don't speak english very well, that's ok, because I can speak a bit of Spanish so I can get round."  

Primera vez en Madrid

"Llegamos hoy y nos quedamos tres días. ¡Madrid nos encanta! Hay mucho que ver, mucha historia. Elegimos venir acá precisamente por la historia de cada uno de sus monumentos, agarrás la Wikipedia y te vas leyendo qué has detrás de lo que estás viendo. 

Por lo general, la gente es servicial, buena onda, cuando preguntamos como llegar a un sitio nos lo dicen. En Mendoza es distinto, allí una persona es más cerrada, le cuesta abrirse; Madrid es muy cosmopolita, te encuentras gente de todas partes, oís muchos idiomas. Deseamos volver a Madrid porque seguro que nos van a quedar muchas cosas por ver. Yo soy ingeniero en sistemas y trabajé para una empresa de Madrid,  siempre he querido aplicar para venirme a trabajar acá. Madrid totalmente cumple mis expectativas."

First time in Madrid

"We got here yesterday and will stay for three days. We love Madrid! There are a lot of things to see, each monument has its story behind. That's exactly why we choose to come to Madrid: the historical monuments. Generally, people is very charming and cordial, when we need to get around they're always willing to help out. In Mendoza, where we come from, is different. People are not used to having tourists around, thus they are a bit closed-minded, Madrid is certainly a cosmopolitan city, you can see people from everywhere and listen different languages. We're looking forward to coming back to Madrid, surely there will be a lot of things we will not be able to see in these three days.

I'm a systems engineer, and worked for a Spanish company, I've always wanted to be relocated to work and live here in Madrid."

Primera y tercera vez en Madrid. En ese orden.

"La ciudad me encantó desde la primera vez que la visité. Tiene mucha historia.

La gente española es muy amigable, de mente abierta, se esfuerzan por comunicarse contigo en inglés, aunque les cuesta, sí. De momento hemos caminado mucho, por Gran Vía y cerca de El Prado. Decidimos venir a Madrid porque era la única ruta directa desde Toronto a España (risas). No, en realidad, nos gusta, tiene buenos restaurantes, lugares interesantes pasar salir por la noche, mucho que ver. De aquí nos vamos a Valencia y Ibiza, pero volveremos a Madrid porque no nos va a dar tiempo a visitar sitios como Toledo o Aranjuez."

First and third time in Madrid.

"I loved it since the first time I came here. Madrid has a lot of historical stuffs that we don't really have in Canada, and things to do. The city itself is quite nice and beautiful. There is a lot of police everywhere, tho! (Me: oh, no! Don't worry, that's because we are right in front of the Royal Palace) 

Everyone is being very nice so far, they really try to communicate in english, although sometimes doesn't work. We have visited Gran Via, The Prado, basically, loads of walking. From Toronto we flight directly to Madrid, that's why Madrid. Just kidding, Madrid has a really fun night life, restaurants, so much to see! We're going also to Valencia and Ibiza at the end of the week.

Madrid is a place that we will definitely visit again! Because there are day trips that we would really like to do, to Toledo and Aranjuez, for instance."

Segunda vez en Madrid.

"En realidad yo estoy de paso, dentro de 9 horas tengo otro vuelo. Es la segunda vez que hago una visita relámpago a Madrid. Sólo he estado en el centro, donde la gente es muy amable. ¡Ah! y también en Casa de Campo. (Mi cara de póker. Silencio) ¡Por el Triatlón!"

Second time in Madrid.

"I'm just passing by, I have to take another flight in 9 hours. The first time I came to Madrid was because of a triathlon. Has only visited the centre, quite crowded, I have to say, nice people, different from Austria. Spanish people looks like more than Italians, you know? Mediterranean style. Oh! I've also been to Casa de Campo. (Me with a pokerface. Silence) Because of the triathlon!"
